Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha

Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha

Queen Saint Isabel ordered the construction of Convent of Santa Clara-a-Velha, located on the left bank of Mondego River. Its construction began in 1286, being under the supervision of Master Domingos Domingues.

Occupied by the nuns the Monastery was sacred in 1330 but it would soon be damaged by Mondego floods. Queen Isabel of Aragon rests here since 1336, when the Monastery was still a shelter for pilgrims who were on their way to Santiago de Compostela. However, in 1667 the Monastery would be definitely abandoned due to Mondego floods.
Santa Clara-a-Velha is still today the most important monument to study Gothic style in Portugal.
